Lossy vs lossless audio: what is the difference?
October 31, 2026 • 3 min read
Lossy audio
Lossy formats such as MP3 and AAC permanently remove some audio data to make files smaller. They are a good fit when storage space matters or when you are sharing files online.
Lossless audio
Lossless formats such as FLAC reduce file size without discarding audio data. When the file is played, the original audio data can be restored exactly, but files are much larger than typical MP3s.
Which should you choose?
Use lossless for master recordings and archives. Use lossy for listening on the go and for sharing. Many people keep both: one lossless original and one smaller copy.
