MP3 vs AAC: which audio format should you use?
October 31, 2026 • 3 min read
What they have in common
MP3 and AAC are both lossy formats. They make files smaller by removing audio detail that is hard to hear, so both are practical for phones, podcasts and everyday listening.
Where AAC does well
AAC is newer than MP3 and generally sounds better at the same low bitrate. If you care most about keeping files small, or you mainly use modern apps and Apple devices, it is a strong choice.
Where MP3 does well
MP3 plays almost everywhere, including older car stereos and portable players. At higher bitrates, most people will find the difference between the two hard to hear in everyday listening.
Choose MP3 if you want one file that works on nearly every device.
