How to check if you can use a video

A simple process for reviewing your rights before you convert anything.

5 steps • 3 min

  1. Find out who owns it

Check the channel, description and credits. The person who uploaded a video is not always the person who owns all of it.

  2. Look for a license

Check whether the video has a license, such as Creative Commons, and read exactly what that license allows.

  3. Ask for permission if needed

If there is no clear license, contact the owner and ask. Keep their reply, ideally in writing.

  4. Check the platform's rules

Read the terms of the service where the video is hosted, as they can include their own limits on downloading.

  5. If you are still unsure, do not convert it

This guide is general information, not legal advice. For important projects, ask a qualified lawyer.
